Rex Evans' Cabaret

Demised and written by ROWLAND LEIGH and REX EVANS
ANONA WINN
LAWRENCE ANDERSON
BASIL HOWES and REX EVANS
THE B.B.C. DANCE ORCHESTRA
Personally conducted by JACK PAYNE
BEFORE the 'event of the evening' - namely, the broadcasting of the first of this year's season of 'Proms,' - comes, in more flippant mood, the second presentation by Rex Evans , of his half-hour cabaret. If you are a regular listener, you know all about Rex Evans, that he sings syncopated songs, that he has rapidly achieved 'star' rank in the world of smart cabaret.
His collaborator in this show, Rowland Leigh, is a young Oxford man with a real gift for snappy topical lyrics. He has written 'the words' for Sophie Tucker, Beatrice Lillie, etc., and leaves shortly for New York, where he has been commissioned to do the lyrics for a new show with music by the late Leslie Stuart.

Devised and written by ROWLAND LEIGH and REX EVANS
ANONA WINN
LAWRENCE ANDERSON
BASIL HOWES and REX EVANS
THE B.B.C. DANCE ORCHESTRA
Pprsonally conducted by JACK PAYNE
ANOTHER 'revue in miniature' from Rex
Evans and Rowland Leigh. Rex Evans has the intimate art of cabaret at his fingers' tips. The famous syncopated singer is shortly to make his first appearance in revue when Chariot's Show of 1928, as I believe it is to be called, comes to the Vaudeville Theatre. Rex Evans has been associated with Andre Chariot in many of his weekly broadcasts. Be sure to listen tonight. In Rowland Leigh we have one of the cleverest writers of smart lyrics-and Rex Evans and Co. certainly know how to ' put them across.'

The Gang

A good concert party is like good champagne. It has kick and sparkle and because it is light it has no after-effects,

'The Gang' A New Concert Party. Saturday May 14.
Dorothy Hurst, the Musical Comedy Actress. Don't fail to listen, if you want to hear : something new.
In the last four years the B.B.C. has given its listeners samples of many good vintages, but in future it is to have its own brand. Tonight this new Concert Party is to be introduced to the listening world. You may have heard it before, though you did not know it. On Tuesdav last week, you may remember, you overheard a musical party in a London flat. 'Who were they?' Now: you know. Tonight you will hear them under their own name, 'The Gang.' Don't miss it, for it is a new thing and likely to make a stir in the world.
Here are all the members of the team. From time to time they will be reinforced by shooting-stars from the outer firmament, but these five will twinkle regularly. First comes Geoffrey Gwyther, composer of some of the brightest and most tuneful music that ever came across the footlights. Theatregoers will remember his music in Tiptoes and Patricia; listeners have heard him at the piano in those most successful Saturday Night Revues. Then Donald Calthrop - no need to say more about him; his whimsical humour and distinctive personality are well j enough known in the theatre and on the air alike. Rex Evans is a newer star. His songs at the piano have made him, in record time. one of the outstanding names of London's most famous cabaret shows. Next we have Ethel Baird, who brings to this venture all her experience of musical comedy and revue in the West-end. And, finally, Carmen Hill, a singer who has been a favourite with listeners ever since broadcasting began. That is 'The Gang' which tonight will have the assistance of Miss London, 9.35.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

To read scans of the Radio Times magazines from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s, you can navigate by issue.
