Broadcasts from this hotel-one of the biggest in the West of England -are well known to listeners. Last night a programme by this special Christmas cabaret was broadcast on the Western wavelength.
Tessa Deane , whose popularity on the air has continually increased since the days when she acted with Sir Nigel Playfair in Derby Day, is to sing among other numbers ' Smilin' Thro' ' and ' My Hero ' (from The Chocolate Soldier).
Marriott Edgar was a pioneer concert-party ar;ist and has been a pantomime dame for twenty-five years. He was for two years with the Co-Optimists, where he met Stanley Holloway for whom he has written much of his material. Nowadays most of his time is taken up with picture work. He has written dialogue for films starring Will Hay, the Crazy Gang. and Will Fyffe.
This afternoon he is to give his popular item ' Uppards a Lancashire version of ' Excelsior and his monologue on elephants.
The Radio Revellers are four very young men-their average age is barely twenty-one. Two years ago they started as novelty vocalists and have succeeded in getting really wonderful teamwork through intensive rehearsals. They have sung in films, in stage shows, and on the air, making a notable success in ' Palace of Varieties '.

Eric Ross's 'DAZZLE CABARET'

The cast includes
John Lovering ; Bradley Harris ; Eric Ross ; Ida Williams ; Gordon Freeman ; The Lurgan Sisters ;
Vera White ; Winnie Carwood
Introduced by Harry S. Pepper
It is some eight years now since the Dazzle Cabaret came into being. This was at a time when there was a great deal of talk about anti-dazzle in respect of motor car headlights and the title of the show, suggested at the time, has stuck ever since. ' Dazzle' has appeared at Bexhill-on-Sea where it was run by Will Pepper, and, after his death, by his sons Harry and Dick.
Eric Ross of the Dazzle Company remained for four summer seasons at Bexhill, and afterwards appeared successfully at Sandown, Worthing, Littlehampton, and Bognor Regis. Ida Williams and Eric Ross have broadcast many times with their double turn at the piano, and were often heard in the early days from Savoy Hill. John Lovering has been in the party for the past five or six years. The four Dazzle Girls, Gordon Freeman , and Betty Robb have been with ' Dazzle ' for the past two seasons. The only newcomer to the show is Bradley Harris who appears for the first time at the London microphone.

DANCE CABARET

Webster Booth, The Romantic Tenor
Davy Burnaby and Michael North
The Carlyle Cousins In Close Harmony
Al Bowlly, Britain's Ambassador of Song and dance to :
Billy Thorburn and his Music with Eddie Gurey
The Billy Boys.
Billy Thorburn , who provides the dancing in this programme, will be remembered as Uncle Jazz by listeners who tuned in to 2LO in the days of Savoy Hill. One of his most vivid memories of the early days of broadcasting is of a foggy November day, ten thousand feet up in the clouds above Croydon aerodrome, when he played the piano in the world's first broadcast from an aeroplane. He allows no brass in his band, and conducts without a baton from his pianist's stool.
Rarely before have so many famous artists been together in a West of England cabaret. Of special interest is the appearance of Webster Booth, the tenor who has delighted critics with his singing at Covent Garden this season in The Magic Flute and Der Rosenkavalier.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

About this project
