'THE SLEEPING BEAUTY'

A fairy tale retold, with words and music by Henry Reed
Produced by David Porter
Listeners have heard The Six Servants and The Shoes that were danced into holes. The Sleeping Beauty completes the triology of fairy plays, written and devised by Henry Reed , who has also written the music for each. Listeners are familiar with his Fables, which have long been popular in the North and were one of the most successful items in the recent series ' Roundabout '. These little fairy plays are on much the same lines, but are essentially romantic and keep faithfully to the stories frjm which they are taken. Henry Reed was once pianist with Henry Hall 's Band at Gleneagles.

'THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES'

A fairy tale retold, with words and music by Henry Reed
Produced by David Porter
This, one of the best of Hans Andersen 's stories, is the one about the two rogues who pretended to weave a cloth for the emperor so marvellous in texture that the stupid and incapable would be unable to see it. They clothe him in nothing, and in nothing he rides out.
Henry Reed , who is responsible for the music and script of more and more fairy tales, has followed the story fairly closely. But he has given the two weavers names-Tweedle and Twoddle-and introduced a love, interest. Wynne Ajello , once more playing a princess, falls in love with the King's third secretary, and listeners will hear the twist she gives to the plot. This Henry Reed version is being broadcast for the first time.

'THE GLASS SLIPPER'

The story of Cinderella retold in words and music by Henry Reed
Produced by David Porter
In the cast:
The Three Chimes, the BBC Revue Chorus, Augmented BBC Variety
Orchestra, leader, Frank CanteU , conductor, Charles Shadwell
Since the war listeners have heard a number of radio plays adapted by Henry Reed from fairy tales and produced by David Porter. Invariably the princess has been played by that most charming of radio artists, Wynne Ajello. So delightful have these plays been that listeners will look forward all the more eagerly to hearing Reed's adaptation of the world's favourite story. The radio Snow White's Cinderella should be a joy to listen to.
And what a cast supports her -the Baron, that grand radio comedian, Dick Francis (how good he was a, few years ago as Mr-Bluebeard, a much-married millionaire, in a Gordon McConnel Grand Christmas Attraction Mr. and Mrs. Bluebeard !) ; the King, C. Denier Warren, of Kentucky Minstrels and White Coons fame ; Buttons, George Moon , who played for Bobby Howes for a month in Hide and Seek ; the Chamberlain, Maurice Denham , who is so versatile that he played Lord Peter Wimsey at the Comedy ; and last but not least, Prince Charming, Dudley Rolph , another radio favourite, who starred in cabaret with Frances Day when she first came over from America.

' ARABIAN NIGHTMARES'

1-' Abu Hasan , the wag '
Adapted for radio by Henrik Ege , with music by Henry Reed
Cast with a chorus of lovely slaves, and the Augmented BBC Revue Orchestra, leader Boris Pecker , conductor
Hyam Greenbaum
Production by David Porter
Henrik Ege has been a prolific writer for radio since' his Depression over Fairyland was broadcast in 1930-many listeners will remember his Crisis over Fairyland, Hey, Listen, and Hokus Bogus , as well as his adaptations of such musical shows as Bitter Sweet, No, No, Nanette, The Vagabond King, and Showboat. His most recent adaptation was Pinocchio, broadcast on May 9.
Ege confessed that until he got down to ' 'The Arabian Nights' he had never cared greatly for the book, and has quite unashamedly 'codded ' the stories, trusting that the purist will not take him to task.
These broadcasts promise to be hilarious stuff, and in this opening ' Nightmare' you will meet Abu Hasan the Wag in the first of his adventures, all of which are based on a well-known story from 'Arabian Nights' Entertainments '.
Henry Reed , who has written the music for the series, did the same for 'Æsop's Fables ', ' Uncle Remus ', and numerous radio versions of fairy tales. He was assisted in practically all of them by producer David Porter.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.
