It is becoming clear from recent field observations that societies of monkeys and apes, in the wild, are surprisingly peaceful. But this is not true when the society is under the stress of overcrowding, as was the case, until recently, in most zoos. What goes wrong under these conditions? Dr. Russell discusses the origins of primate warfare.
