Symphony No. 4
(first broadcast performance) played by the BBC Northern Orchestra
(Leader, Reginald Stead )
Conducted by Lawrence Leonard
Stanley Bate , who was forty-four last December, has had a number of works broadcast, including his third symphony, concertos for piano and violin, and a concerto grosso for string orchestra. His fourth and most recent symphony was begun in Rio de Janeiro in 1954 and completed in London the following year. The conductor, Lawrence Leonard, writes : The strength of this work springs from the composer's refusal to be worried by stylistic inhibitions. He is a neo-romantic, and proud of it.'
The symphony has four movements:
Andante moderato, Andante, Presto, and Moderato.
