The Anaihemata is concerned with the inheritance of Western civilisation as perceived by ' a Londoner of Welsh and English parentage, of Protestant upbringing, of Catholic subscription.' The action takes place against the background of the Mass and thus, symbolically, of the Crucifixion. Of the eight sections, Rile and Fore-Time describes the emergence of man-as-artist. Middle-Sea and Lear-Sea recalls the flowering of civilisation on the shores of the Mediterranean, whence a ship sails to Lear's island of Britain. In Angle-Land the ship is driven by storms to the North Sea; in Redriff it is berthed in the Pool of London. The Lady of the Pool evokes the Roman foundations of the City. Keel, Ram, Stauros has for its theme the Tree of Calvary. Mabinog's Liturgy recalls the Annunciation and the Nativity, with an interlude on Guenevere at the Christmas Mass. Sherthursdaye and Venus Day describes, symbolically, the events of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The work ends with the theme of the Holy Cross.
