Honegger's Fourth Symphony was written for the twentieth anniversary of the foundation of rhe Basic Chamber Orchestra, and is dedicated to Paul Sacher. The composer says that he gave the work the sub-title 'Basle Delights ' partly because it contains references to old popular songs of the town and partly for personal reasons. There are three movements.

These three works were first heard in their present form at Leipzig church service during the second quarter of the eighteenth century. The motet Lobet den Herrn C Praise the Lord, all ye heathen') has a fully written out accompaniment for organ with traditional doubling of cellos and basses. Ich habe genug, a bass cantata for Candlemas, is one of the few that Bach himself provided with extensive phrase-marks. The prevailing theme of the text expresses a longing for death, and the tranquil beauty of the music is greatly enhanced by a solo oboe. Herz und Mund was revised by Bach so as to be suitable for the Feast of the Visitation, one of the additional numbers being the now famous chorale 'Jesus bleibet meine Freude.' This evening it will be heard in its original scoring with oboes, strings, and trumpet. (Denis Stevens)
