Kathleen Ferrier (contralto)
Peter Pears (tenor)
Benjamin Britten (piano)
(Postponed from Feb. 6)
Benjamin Britten's Canticle is a setting of part of a fourteenth-century miracle play, ' The Sacrifice of Isaac,* which belongs to the Chester Scriptural Cycle. It is the composer's most recent work, and was first performed in Nottingham last January. The Canticle, which was specially written for Kathleen Ferrier and Peter Pears, reveals, on a miniature scale, the skill and imagination of the composer (more particularly when setting words to music), together with his ingenuity in devising a novel and evocative piano accompaniment.
