BBC Symphony Orchestra
(Leader, Paul Beard)
Conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham, Bt.
Part 1
Maurice Johnstone , who is the BBC's Head of North Regional Music, conducted his Cumbrian Rhapsody Tam Hows at a Promenade Concert on August 6. It was broadcast in the Third Programme in May of last year. Banners, described as a Celebration Overture, was first performed by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra during the Festival of Britain celebrations in Liverpool on July 28. As the title suggests, it is a stirring piece of music, broad and majestic, in A major, and marked Allegro moderato con spirito. In the middle section there are interesting variations of time before the return of the main march-like theme. Harold Rutland
