Adapted for broadcasting by Peter Stucley from Daphne du Maurier's novel of the same name
With and Davey also and Harry the Pedlar, a clerk from
Truro, a maid, and the wreckers
Place: Cornwall
Time: Early nineteenth century
The play produced by Michael Goodwin
When Mary Yellan 's mother died and her aunt, wife of the landlord of Jamaica Inn, invited the girl to make her home there, Mary little imagined what scenes of horror and bloodshed she was soon to be involved in. From the dark hints of the coachman who set her down at the inn and from her own experience, she quickly found that her uncle was as full-blooded a villain as has ever decorated the pages of a romantic novel. What she'did not discover, however, until almost too late was that there could be even greater villains than Joss Merlyn , that there was a man before whom
Joss, the terror of the countryside, was ' like a child in the game '.
In ' Jamaica Inn', one of last year's best-selling novels, Daphne du Maurier took a number of favourite ingredients — smuggling, wrecking, lonely and mysterious inn, complete and whole-hearted villain, distressed but not unresourceful damsel-and concocted from them a brilliant new prescription.
