Eric Spruce began his career at the age of twelve, when he was appointed organist at the Normacott Wesleyan Church, Stoke-on-Trent. When he was twenty-two he had his first appointment as a solo cinema organist at Smethwick. Further appointments followed at Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Washwood Heath (Birmingham) and Bournemouth. He gave his first broadcast from the Palladium organ at Paignton in August 1938.
