'PORTLAND STONE'

Regional Programme London

by James Bone
Produced by Francis Dillon
All the great buildings in London owe their character to Portland Stone. From the days of Wren and Inigo Jones up to Holden in modern times the great architects have used it for their masterpieces. In the Isle of Portland you can see great holes, and the workmen will tell you, ' Out of that came St. Paul's '. Pictures of some famous London buildings, old and new, in which Portland stone has been used in the construction, will be found on page 7.
The stone-workers have their own songs, and their own peculiar customs which have been recorded for this programme.
