' Good Gardeners Dig Deep '
R. S. Lynch ,
Gardening Manager, Dartington Hall ,
Totnes
A talk on groundwork, types of soil, soil analysis, with some notes on manuring
R. S. Lynch , son of the late Curator of Cambridge University Botanic Gardens, followed his father's wish that he should take an interest in plants. His bias was towards the ornamental rather than the purely botanical, and, taking up the profession of landscape gardener, he studied in botanic gardens, nurseries for ornamental plants, and landscape-drawing offices.
In Paris he studied under Andre the successor to the famous le Notre, and also in Lyons under Morel. He came to Dartington Hall in 1928 to renovate the grounds and to carry out the design and construction of further landscape features, one of the first being the large open-air theatre.
