THE NORWICH PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY'S CHORAL AND ORCHESTRAL CONCERT

Regional Programme London

Frank A. Tayler (organ)
The Whitecroft and District Male
Voice Choir
The Clifton String Orchestra
Leader, Joan Allen
Conducted by Reginald Redman from the Colston Hall , Bristol
This is one of the regular series of choral and orchestral concerts to be broadcast during the autumn and spring from the Colston Hall, Bristol. The series began on September 19.
The Colston Hall is one of the largest buildings of its kind in the country, the seating capacity being about 4,000. It stands on the site of the Carmelite Friary, afterwards known as the Great House. Edward Colston , an eighteenth-century philanthropist, bought the Great House in 1709, and established a hospital. At a later date it became Colston School under the government of the Society of Merchant Venturers.
Upon the removal of the School to Stapleton, the Great House with its site was bought by a few public-spirited citizens, and a hall was opened in 1867.
