The Minister of Agriculture will open this new series of autumn talks by emphasising the topicality and importance of the subject. Anthony Hurd , well-known broadcaster on farming topics, will continue by indicating the extent to which agriculture enters into the life of every citizen. It is still true that more people in this country are employed in agriculture than in any other single primary or manufacturing industry. The changing processes of agriculture, and the policies for dealing with the problems of the land, are vital, whether from the point of view of nutrition or from that of pure economics. The question of the country's food supply, for instance, should be of the keenest personal interest to everyone, and not only to those directly connected with farming.

Under the direction of Eric Arden from the Royal Exeter Hotel, 
Bournemouth 
The orchestra of the Royal Exeter Hotel was started by Eric Arden in 1935. Arden had returned from two years' tea-planting in India in 1929. After playing the piano with various bands, he started his own band in Conway in 1931. Before going to Bournemouth the band played for three years for Tom Laughton (Charles Laughton 's brother) at Scarborough and afterwards at Harrogate.
