Eric Spruce began his career at the age of twelve, when he was appointed organist at the Normacott Wesleyan Church, Stoke-on-Trent. When he was twenty-two he had his first appointment as a solo cinema organist at the Rink Cinema, Smethwick, and two years later went to the Gaumont Palace, Birmingham. Further appointments followed at the Wolverhampton Super Cinema, the Beaufort Cinema, Birmingham, and Bournemouth.
While he was at Birmingham he did a considerable amount of broadcasting, and on August 8 gave his first broadcast from the Palladium organ at Paignton. In 1937 he was elected Warden of the Cinema Organists' section of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.
