A Variety programme broadcast from the stage of THE HIPPODROME,
SOUTHAMPTON
The Hippodrome, Southampton, was originally built as the Prince of Wales Theatre in 1883 by J. W. Gordon, who previously owned and conducted the old Grand Theatre in French Street, Southampton (not to be confused with the new Grand Theatre which now stands in the Civic Centre Road, and was built in 1898).
On March 25, 1905, the Prince of Wales Theatre closed, and alterations were immediately begun to change the building into the Hippodrome, under the direction of Walter de Frece (afterwards Sir Walter). The Hippodrome opened on October 9 of the same year, the ceremony being conducted by the Mayor of Southampton.
The Hippodrome was afterwards taken over by Charles Gulliver, and later by the General Theatre Corporation. More recently, in 1934, the building came under the direction of Captain A. E. Story, in whose hands it is at present.
