A VIOLONCELLO RECITAL

Regional Programme Midland

Roy Allan 's Band was formed ten years ago, and since then has seen very little change in its personnel. The band is well known in Pembrokeshire, Glamorgan, and Carmarthenshire, and has won several dance-band contests. The alto saxophone player Elwyn Davies , is totally blind, and is a pupil at the Swansea and South Wales Institution for the Blind. He has, however, won medals in numerous contests and he greatly impressed Henry Hall when the band competed at the All-Wales Variety Week Competitions held in Swansea. The leader of the band, Roy Allan , who plays the trombone, is the holder of three gold medals. Most of the orchestrations are arranged by the pianist, Ralph Jubb. Welsh listeners will be interested to know that the signature tune of this band is ' Ar Hyd y Nos '.

J. Bowen Evans
The early journalistic career of J. Bowen Evans took him from South Wales to Rangoon, where he became assistant editor of the daily paper, Rangoon Times, and later he was its news editor. For some time he was also Reuter's Burma correspondent. Subsequently he worked as Burma correspondent of the Exchange Telegraph Company. After the war, he joined a rice-milling and exporting firm with mills in Rangoon, Bassein, and Akyab, and he became one of its managers. Leaving Burma after twenty-one years in the Orient, he joined the overseas editorial staff of Reuter in London, and in 1934 was appointed Managing Editor of The North Wales Chronicle series of newspapers, which includes The North Wales Pioneer, The Flint-shire Observer, and Y Clonanydd.
