Flockton United Band this year celebrates its hundredth birthday. The players are mostly miners, although there are two mill-hands in the present band. Only in the last two or three years have they attended contests, but under Ernest Thorpe's conductorship they have won forty-one prizes in thirty contests, including awards at Belle Vue in 1936 and 1937. Last autumn they won the News Chronicle trophy at Alexandra Palace.
Local patriotism keeps the band going. In the small village of only 1,400 people almost everyone pays a penny a week subscription to the band.
'The Tumbler', in which H. Lumb plays the solo trombone, is one of Ernest Thorpe 's own compositions.
