Symphony No. 4 in B flat, Op. 60
Beethoven
Adagio. Allegro vivace; 2. Adagio ; 3. Minuetto. Allegro vivace. Trio, Un poco meno allegro; 4. Allegro ma non troppo
' The Fourth Symphony in B flat', said Schumann, ' stands like a slender Greek maiden between two Norse giants '. Indeed, the music is full of grace and charm, and the slow movement is one of Beethoven's most beautiful inspirations, of which Berlioz said : ' The being who wrote such a m.irvel of inspiration as this movement was not a man..... Such must be the song of the Archangel Michael , as he contemplates the world's uprising to the threshold of the empyrean .
Concerto for violoncello and orchestra
Schonberg
(Solo violoncello, EMANUEL FEUERMANN)
The name of Schonberg has a rather terrifying significance to the listener whose tastes are fessentially conservative. But there is nothing very terrifying about the composer's new 'Cello Concerto, which is really an adaptation of an old concerto for clavicembalo by the Austrian composer Georg Matthias Monn (1717-175°). who was one of the forerunners of the classical symphony.
Schonberg has done nothing to alter the essential character of the music, though he has scored it for a large modern orchestra that includes harp, celesta, xylophone and glockenspiel, and has given the 'cello a brilliant and effective solo part.
