LOUIS GODOWSKY (violin)
(Soloist, LOUIS GODOWSKY)
Louis Godowsky was born at Leeds, in 1900, of a Polish father and a Russian mother. Unlike most infant prodigies, Godowsky has carried out a promise that he showed at the age of four years when he played a concerto at the Albert Hall. Some years later he went to Leopold Auer for lessons, and was, as a student, in the same class as Heifetz and Elman. After the War he toured Germany and appeared as a soloist with those celebrated conductors Nikisch, Frederick Stock and Mengelberg.
Godowsky's Rhapsody Hungarica is a remarkably interesting and brilliant violin work. Although written in Hungarian idiom, the composer has not used any actual Hungarian tunes. It is a very original piece, full of luscious tunes and virile rhythms, and virtuosity is exploited with the most artistic effect.
Second Ballet Suite......Gluck, arr. Mottl i. March (Alceste), Minuet (Iphigenia in Aulis), March (repeated) ; 2. Grazioso (Paris and Helena); 3. Dance of the Slaves (Iphigenia in Aulis)
