Romeo and Juliet, one of Tchaikovsky's first important compositions, was written in the early eighteen-seventies at a period when the composer was in close touch with the leaders of the ' nationalist' group in Petersburg, particularly with Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, and the art critic Stassov. The subject of the overture was actually suggested to the composer by Stassov who had married into an English family and was a passionate admirer of English literature in general, and Shakespeare in particular.
Musically, Romeo and Juliet shows the influence of Balakirev, who took a keen interest in'the progress of the composition and to whom it was dedicated. His admiration of the work was shared by the other members of his circle. Rimsky-Korsakov considered the love-theme ' one of the most beautiful melodies in Russian music '.
