Brahms
Brahms conducted the first performance in 1881 when he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy a: Breslau University. This overture is not at all 'academic' in style, as its title might suggest, rather is it characterised by brightness and a ' festival ' spirit. Brahms uses several students' songs in the composition.
