THE NORTHERN STUDIO
ORCHESTRA
Directed by JOHN BRIDGE
NIGHT music which in itself means nothing but music to be heard in a relaxed, possibly a little sentimental, mood, has many labels-Nocturne, Serenade, Dream, and so forth. The labels are by no means new, Mozart wrote a number of Serenades, and occasionally a Notturno. The first man to use the actual word Nocturne was John Field , and he was followed by Chopin and by every Romantic composer ever since. For some reason, probably attributable to 'Chopin, the mood of the Nocturne is usually a little melancholy; the word Serenade has, since Mozart's time, come to mean something to do with love. This again was doubtless owing to the fact that love is more active after the sun has set, when, obviously, there is more time to give to it.
