The basing of fiction on real life has its pitfalls. Young Alec Neill made this discovery when he wrote a successful play using his own family as the characters and interpreting them too clearly for their liking. That is the theme of The Family Portrait, which John Coulter wrote specially for the microphone, and which was first broadcast in Belfast in 1935. The hero, Alec Neill , comes from a working-class family living in a back street in Belfast, and the only subject he knows well is his family. His play is a success by everybody's standards except the family's ; they are unable to see themselves as others see them. John Coulter has treated his theme with sympathy and insight, and The Family Portrait should be a noteworthy contribution to the Ulster Radio Drama Festival.
