Paul Henry
Having been born and bred among the smoke and smell and noise of the town, Paul Henry , distinguished Ulster artist, had accepted these things as part of the natural order. But when he went to Paris to study, his studio was in a garden, and that, combined with a reading of Thoreau's ' Walden, or Life in the Woods', changed his outlook. Now he spends most of his' time in the Wicklow Hills, where the petrol pump is not part of the scenery and the arterial road has not cut into the heart of the country.
This is the theme Paul Henry has chosen to talk about in his contribution to the ' As I See It' series, talks in which established microphone personalities are allowed to choose their own subject and treat it as they will.
He has some hard things to say about a civilisation that has manifested itself in vulgar urban encroachment into rural beauty and seclusion.
