' Neece O'Haughan'
William Moore
Neece O'Haughan , son of a County Antrim farmer, was hanged at Carrickfergus in 1720 at the age of thirty for highway robbery. In his short life he succeeded in terrorising the whole countryside.
As a child he was violently antagonistic to any kind of authority. He became head of a gang of outlaws operating over a wide area around Carrickfergus and the outskirts of Belfast. By imposing a levy on farmers in the district he anticipated the methods of American racketeers; he had the foresight to ' sweeten ' with odd guineas potentially useful people in advance of trouble ; and he had an elaborate system of hide-outs '.
In spite of all this, he shares with many other highwaymen an aura of romance. He was not altogether an unpopular figure. Several biographers have spoken a good word for him, and one well-known Irish novelist wrote a book with him as the hero.
