' Tom Eccles '
Wilson Guy
In the latter half of the eighteenth century there were no police in Ulster, and highwaymen, robbers, and rogues flourished. But highwaymen were not always unpopular. Apart from the prerogative that some of them exercised in robbing the rich to give to the poor, many wealthy landlords and farmers were glad to pay them tribute in return for being passed by and protected from plunder by lesser fry.
Often when such highwaymen were brought to trial they found influence with the gentry they protected. From 1780 to 1790 Tyrone had such a highwayman in Tom Eccles, handsome and fearless, a lover of horses and dogs, a man who took amazing risks in the pursuit of his profession. His exploits will be recalled in the talk this evening.
