FRED HUGHES (tenor) i Liadov (1855-1914), one of the lesser, but one of the most charming of Russian composers, confined himself chiefly to short pieces. He was often planning to do big things, but they never materialised.
The eight Russian folk songs were originally intended to form a ballet which was known as the Eight Russian Fairy Tales. These little pieces are of extraordinary charm and orchestrated with the utmost delicacy of effect.
