A musical burlesque by The Melluish Brothers
Cast
Scene, Rumble's Store
The Midland Revue Chorus
The Midland Revue Orchestra
Leader, Norris Stanley
Conductor, Reginald Burston Production by Gordon Crier
This production of the Melluish burlesque was broadcast on New Year's Eve in 1936. On this occasion the Lawrence Baskcomb part will be played by Bobbie Comber , and the producer will be Gordon Crier , in place of Martyn Webster. Otherwise the cast is the same.
AH the action takes place in Rumble's Store. At the beginning a shop girl, Milly Mintdrop , is receiving a proposal from the son of Sir Humbert Rumble. Then her father, just out of prison for a crime of which he said he was innocent, arrives and asks for a new suit. He has to hide in a roll of linoleum while he is changing, and in the meantime Milly is accused of stealing from the men's outfitting department. A policeman is brought.
Milly says the suit was for a customer, but she can't produce him trouserless. Finally Mintdrop emerges, recognises Sir Humbert as the man responsible for his crime, and pulls a gun on him. An apology, however, is accepted-for a consideration.
There are several typical Melluish songs, including one about modem salesmanship.
' Only a Shop Girl ' was broadcast in the National programme on Tuesday
