This theatre was opened in the middle of the nineteenth century, one of its earliest dramas being In Duty Bound. When reconstructed in 1902 the theatre was under the direction of the late Henry Battersby.
Florence Barnes made her debut at the Royal, and other stars to appear were Dan Rolyat , who starred with Frank Bateman 's Company in Sentenced for Life ; Bransby Williams ; Sydney Howard ; and, more recently, Tommy Trinder.
The Royal was turned into a cinema some years ago but has since returned to stage shows.
