Stanley Wilson was only fifteen when he won an open scholarship for composition at the Royal College of Music, where he studied under Sir Charles Stanford. After he left the College he was appointed music master at Ipswich School.
The Portrait Variations were written at the beginning of this year. Each variation is intended to reflect the personality rather than the musical style of a great musician, such as Bach, Beethoven, Rimsky-Korsakov, Schumann, and Debussy. The ' Self-Portrait' contains several quotations from Stanley Wilson 's own music.
