The Rushden Temperance Band
Conductor, Thomas Young
Each item will be preceded by a short extract from the history of the band
No fewer than three bands in the Northamptonshire town of Rushden have had previous broadcasts in the Midland Region. Most of the players are employed in the boot-and-shoe industry. The Rushden Temperance, the band to be heard this evening, was founded in 1885. It has had an excellent record in contests. Its successes include the winning of the Northamptonshire Championship; sectional prizes at the Crystal Palace ; and second place to the Besses o' the Barn at the Crystal Palace in 1903 and to Black Dyke qt Belle Vue, Manchester, in 1908. The band made its radio debut five years ago. The conductor, Thomas Young, came from the St. Hilda's Band. On the conclusion of this series of programmes there will be, later in the spring, two programmes entitled ' Question Time for Brass Bands '. Denis Wright will come to the microphone to answer questions sent in by people interested in brass-band music in the Midlands, His answers will be illustrated by instrumental players.
