Beethoven himself spoke of his Eighth Symphony as the ' Little Symphony in F ', and as one of which he was particularly fond, perhaps for the reason that it is in spirit the brightest of the whole nine. Tchaikovsky once wrote an analysis of this syrgphony, from which we quote: 'It is the last bright smile, the last response given by the poet of human sorrows and hopeless despair to the voice of gladnessIt is filled with a spirit of serene content and unrestrained joy. It depicts the gentle, earthly delights of humanity before the soul is distracted by evil, doubt, and despair.' In this symphony Beethoven's ever delightful humour appears at its brightest.

EDWIN FISCHER AND ORCHESTRA
Mozart's Piano Concerto in D minor was written in 1785, when he was at the height of his powers. His had just come to stay with him and his wife in Vienna, and the very day after his arrival (that is, on February 11) heard his son play this new composition at one of his own subscription concerts. That same night the delighted father wrote to his daughter: ' Wolfgang gave a new and first-rate piano concerto at which the copyist was still working yesterday when we arrived, and your brother had not had time even to play through the rondo, as he had to look over the copyist's work. The (passionately excited) Concerto is in D minor.' father
