S. C. Cotterell. who was born at Cannock, Staffordshire, got his musical training at Kneller Hall and was for fifteen years solo clarinet of the Coldstream Guards Band. His first appearance at the microphone was in the first week of broadcasting from the old .Witton station. He was a member of the old Midland Orchestra, directed by Joseph Lewis , and subsequently joined the Midland studio orchestra (the Nonet).
The late Mr. Swinnerton-Heap, composer of the sonata S. C. Cotterell is to play this evening, was one of the first winners of the Mendelssohn scholarship and was conductor of the Birmingham Festival Choral Society. The sonata, written for Henry Lazarus, had its first performance at the Clef Club, Birmingham.
