Leader, Alfred Cave
Conducted by Eric. Warr
Overture, Mclusina
A far prettier title to Mendelssohn's Overture is the real one, ' Overture to the story of the lovely Melusina '. The tale is drawn from a picturesque old French legend, and tells how Melusina, a fairy, imprisoned her father in a mountain in Northumberland. Her punishment was swift and terrible ; for one day in each week she had to exist as half-woman, half-serpent from the hips downwards, like a mermaid.
Westcott Frederick Westcott , who is an Exeter man and took his M.A. and Mus.
Bac. at Oxford, was recently appointed to succeed Heller Nicholls as music master at Dene Close School, Cheltenham. He has written a good deal of orchestral music and some part-songs. The Variations' to be played this evening are based on the song ' Fairest Isle, All Isles Excelling' from Purcell's King Arthur.
