A Recorded Summary of Birmingham's Civic Tributes
Before devoting himself to national politics, Joseph Chamberlain was one of the greatest municipal reformers of the Victorian age. In his three years as Mayor of Birmingham (1873-75) he set afoot a great scheme of slum clearance, led the way in the purchase of gas and water undertakings for the city, and gave impetus to a vigorous progressive spirit in education and public health administration generally. He was a pioneer of the scheme for creating the University of Birmingham, and its first Chancellor. The tower in the Central Court of the University buildings was erected in his memory.
