Interlude in One Act

MIDLAND ORCHESTRA

Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari was born in Venice in 1876, and studied in Munich under Rheinberger, where he secured a certain success as a composer. On his return to Venice in 1899 Wolf-Ferrari's oratorio La Sulamite was performed by the Philharmonic Society. In the following year his first opera on the subject of Cinderella was produced at the Teatro Fenice, but it was not very successful. From 1902 to 1912 he was director of the School of Benedetto Marcello in Venice, and produced many eighteenth-century operas there. The influence of the style of that period is evident in several of his own works.
By far the most popular of his several operas was Susanna's Secret, which, although based upon a now out-of-date subject of a wife's misbehaving herself by smoking cigarettes, is full of charm and simplicity.
