Relayed from The Town Hall, Birmingham
Why a particular piece of music, such as Handel's Largo or Elgar's 'Salut d'amour', should enjoy a continuous world popularity while equally good and charming pieces remain unnoticed, is a question that no one has ever answered satisfactorily. The same applies to bigger works, such as Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and Schubert's 'Unfinished' Symphony which, although masterpieces of their kind, possess no more musical and romantic features of popular appeal than do many other symphonies that are well known to musicians but unknown to the 'man in the street'.

Symphony No. 8, in B minor (The Unfinished) - Schubert i. Allegro moderato ; 2. Andante con moto
Symphony No. 5, in C minor, Op. 67 - Beethoven 1. Allegro con brio ; 2. Andante con moto ; 3. Scherzo: Allegro; 4. Allegro-Presto
