Harriet Cohen (pianoforte)
Relayed from Queen's College, Birmingham

(First broadcast performance)

Dr. Vaughan Williams originally wrote the Charterhouse Suite as a pianoforte solo, it was then arranged by the composer and James Brown for string orchestra. The present adaptation for pianoforte and string orchestra has been made by Harriet Cohen. The name Charterhouse was given to the suite in memory of the composer's old school. The 'Saga Fragment' by Arnold Bax was conceived in the form of a piano quartet but the rough and turbulent nature of its contents suggested a broader treatment and the composer has, therefore, scored the piece for a small orchestra and piano - the piano part remaining virtually identical with the original.
