Bliss's ' Pastorate ', dedicated to 'Elgar, was written specially for the Harold Brooke Choir, who first performed it in 1929. Each of the seven sections into which this work is divided consists of a setting of verses by Ben Jonson, John Fletcher, Poliziano, Robert Nichols, and Theocritus. The music shows Bliss's deep poetic sensitiveness, and polished craftsmanship, and it represents one of the best efforts of his maturity.
