Alex Penney , who has formed this Quartet, is a Derby soprano who has done a great deal of concert work and has broadcast many times, both as a soloist and in production shows.
Walter Payne , also a Derby singer, was one of the British Singers Quartet formed by Madame Marchesi. He first broadcast ten years ago. Both Miss Noton and Mr. Swindell are Derby singers.
The song-cycle The Philosopher and the Lady ' that the Alex Penney Quartet is singing, is another of Easthope Martin's numerous song-cycles. Like many other composers he has become associated with one work (' Songs of the Fair '), which has earned enormous popularity, but he has composed many other songs and song-cycles which deserve equal success.
