In this beautiful work, Sir Walford Davies catches the tender, whimsical nature of his subject perfectly. The five movements describe in music some episodes in Peter Pan 's fantastic career. In the first movement a section called ' Peter gets ready to fly ', is marked by the preponderance of trills in the music. ' Peter and the Fairies' section gives us a delicious little duet between the two violins. In the fourth number Peter makes a pipe out of a reed and makes his own music. The idea is illustrated by a lovely stretch of music that sounds like an improvisation. Peter's Lullaby is supposed to have been made out of the way Peter's mother said his name.
This music was first broadcast by the Alex Cohen Quartet in 1931, also at Christmas time. A more seasonable broadcast is difficult to imagine, and to make it an annual Christmas entertainment is, of course, as it should be.
