An Organ Recital

Regional Programme London

by G. D. CUNNINGHAM
Relayed from The Town Hall, Birmingham Marcel Dupro has had an astonishing career.
Belonging to a family distinguished in organ music, he was only ten when he attracted attention by playing some of Bach's Preludes and Fugues by heart on the organ. His most remarkable feat was a series of ten recitals, in the course of which he played the whole of Bach's organ music by heart, a feat which few indeed could emulate. Since then, Dupré has given recitals in many parts of the world, and is everywhere looked up to as one of the greatest living masters of the organ. His extempore playing is as famous as his mastery of the classics, on the high level which makes it difficult for the hearer to believe that it is really improvised on the spur of the moment; so it was when the great men of an older day extemporised, often in contest with one another, and on melodies given to them there and then. As a composer he has contributed a number of fine organ pieces which are in the repertory of most organists.
