The elephant's reputation for intelligence is well known. It is not so commonly realised that some ele- phants show surprising individual traits. They may be, in a word, ' personalities '. Frank Melland , who was in Central Africa for over a quarter of a century, has had a great experience of the wild elephant and its ways. He is going to tell some stories about the elephants' he has known.
