Leader, Louis WILLOUGHBY
Conductor, BOYD NEEL
The Suite for Strings is Schonberg's latest work, and received its first performance in New York under Otto Klemperer some weeks ago. It marks yet another phase in Schonberg's development, for it is quite unlike anything he has written before, except perhaps the recent 'Cello Concerto. But whereas the concerto was an attempt to construct something entirely new on an old work of Monn, the present Suite is quite original in material, although classical forms are used.
The Overture reminds us continuously of Beethoven's Grosse Fuge. It consists of alternate slow and quick sections (the quick sections being in fugal style), which are rounded off with a Coda. The Adagio for muted strings contains passages of great beauty, the contrapuntal weaving of parts being extremely complex.
The Minuet would doubtless not have been so called had it been written by Mozart, but the main section and Trio conform to a definite formal plan, with repeats, etc. The Gavotte, also, has repeats and a Coda which is, however, more complex. The Gigue is the most extended and highly developed of the five movements. It is in the classical 12/8 tempo, and there is a predominance of cross-rhythms.
