(Section D)
Led by LAURANCE TURNER
Conducted by FRANK BRIDGE
Composer, conductor, viola-player, Frank Bridge is one of the most gifted and most striking personalities in modern British music. At one time people used to think of him as an inhabitant of the austere world of chamber music, though it is a little difficult to connect his vital, exuberant personality with any form of austerity. It is true he began his career in that world, both as performer and composer. But he has also enriched English song literature with a number of fine things of the type that appeals equally to the connoisseur and the Man-in-the-armchair-beside-the-loudspeaker. (' Love went a-riding ' is only the most popular of a dozen such songs.) And he has written some lovely orchestral poems, nature impressions by a man who knows and loves his Richard Jefferies.
Bridge is equally at home at the conductor's desk. He served his apprenticeship with the baton a quarter of a century ago, when he used to rehearse the New Symphony Orchestra, and since then he has conducted opera at the Savoy (1910-1 1), and Covent Garden (1913). Practically all the most famous British and American orchestras have played under him.
