Episodes from the Arabian Nights by Rimsky-Korsakov
THE B.B.C. ORCHESTRA
(Section D)
Led by MARIE WILSON
Conducted by EDWARD CLARK
Listeners with memories of the Russian Ballet production of Scheherazade ', will recollect that although Diaghilev used Rimsky-Korsakov's music, he adapted it to a quite different scenario of his own, in which the music of the storm and shipwreck, for instance, accompanies a scene- of massacre of Negro slaves in Schariar's harem ! But a little matter like that never worried Diaghilev.
The composer's widow protested indignantly at the outrage on her husband's music, and Rimsky-Korsakov himself would certainly have been furious, for he hated the adaptation for ballet purposes of music not written for dancing. (Isadora Duncan 's borrowings annoyed him beyond measure). Yet the ballet form of ' Scheherazade ' served to make the music immensely popular and few who saw it on the stage with Bakal's gorgeous colourings will condemn Diaghilev's high-handed adaptation.
