Act I
Relayed from Dresden
The first performance of a new opera by Richard Strauss at the Dresden Opera House has always been an event of major importance. One recalls that on the occasions when his operas Salome, Elektro, and Der Rosenkavalier, amongst them, were produced for the first time at the historic theatre, the musical world found little else but the new opera to talk about for days before and after the performance. Times are changed, but the production of a new opera by the most successful German opera composer of the century still claims the world's interest. The libretto of Arabella, by the late Hugo von Hofmannsthal, is based on a short story of his called ' Lucidor.' The action takes place in Vienna about 1860. A nobleman of an impoverished family has two daughters, beautiful and much sought after; but, despairing of marrying them both off, he disguises the younger as a boy, in order to improve the chances of the elder. The second act, which does not form part of the broadcast, takes place at the famous ' Fiacre Ball ' during the Carnival.
