NICOLA BLAKE (Soprano) NINO MAUDINI (Tenor)   The first number of this group, El Pano
Moruno, is transcribed from a collection of seven Spanish songs. It has been used by the composer also in his ballet ' The Three Cornered Hat,' and is there associated with the Miller, one of the chief characters in the ballet. The second number, Asturiana, is a dance tune from the province of the Asturias. 
The jota is a dance met with most frequently in the northern provinces of Spain, particularly in Aragon, where it is so popular that when the Aragonese are not dancing the jota they are probably singing it. The dance is a kind of free waltz, and originated in the 12th century from a Rabelaisian Moor, Aben Jot, whose conduct was such that he found Aragon the only province in Spain he could live in without risk of being thrown out. Gratefully he invented the dance that bears his name, and handed it to the people of Aragon. There are many types of jota, almost every town in Aragon having its own. They all have. this in common, however, the music is in three-four like a waltz, and is of the guitar, castanets, and tambourine order...
